  • Why Indoor Air Feels So Dry in Winter

Cold weather doesn’t just affect temperatures—it dramatically impacts indoor humidity. During winter, many homes experience humidity levels well below the recommended comfort range, even when a humidifier is running correctly.

This is completely normal—and it has everything to do with how cold air behaves.

Why Humidity Is Harder to Increase in Winter

Cold air holds far less moisture than warm air. When cold outdoor air enters your home and is heated, its relative humidity drops sharply.

    For example:

    • Outdoor air at 30°F can hold less than half the moisture of indoor air at 70°F

    • Once heated, that air becomes extremely dry

    • Your humidifier must continuously replace moisture being lost through ventilation, drafts, and heating systems

This constant moisture loss is why humidity levels often plateau in winter, even after running a humidifier overnight.

  • Why Your Humidifier May Not Reach the Set Humidity Level

Blueair humidifiers add moisture at a fixed maximum output rate. In very dry conditions—such as cold winters or hot, dry climates—moisture is removed from the air as fast as it’s added.

Factors that limit humidity increases include:

    • Very cold outdoor temperatures

    • Continuous indoor heating

    • Dry incoming air from outside

    • Natural air leaks around doors, windows, and walls

    • Large indoor/outdoor temperature differences

In these conditions, 30–40% relative humidity is often the most realistic and comfortable range.

Trying to maintain 50% or higher in winter may not be achievable—and can increase the risk of condensation on windows and walls.

  • Why Small Increases Matter

If your humidifier raises humidity by only 5–10%, that can still represent a significant amount of added moisture.

Think of it like filling a bucket with a hole in the bottom—the humidifier is adding water continuously, but the environment is removing it at the same time.

Designed for Comfort, Not to Fight Nature

Blueair humidifiers, including the Dreamwell™ Humidifier, are designed to:

    • Improve comfort and sleep quality

    • Support respiratory wellness

    • Deliver stable, balanced humidity

They are not intended to override extreme environmental conditions—but to make dry indoor air noticeably more comfortable.
