What air purifier do I need?

How to choose an air purifier

With all the particles we inhale with every breath we take, you have every right to be alarmed. Fortunately, air purifiers can deliver clean, fresh air, even in a less-than-pristine environment.

If you decide to buy an air purifier, how do you know which air purifier to buy? With all the competing air purifiers out there and their different features and functions, it is not easy to choose an air purifier. But you can make it easier with this air purifier buying guide, which helps even when you have no expert help at hand.

Which air purifier to choose?

The first step when you shop for an air purifier online or in a store is to select one whose technology is effective for what you are trying to achieve. Most quality air purifiers can filter 99.7% of all particles down to 0.1 micron.* Blueair’s HEPASilent™ technology leads in the category, delivering the highest performance at low energy consumption and almost completely silently.

Silent air purifiers

Noise is another important consideration. Blueair air purifiers are among the most silent air purifiers on the market and the only ones that deliver large amounts of clean air at the low levels mostly used in social situations or at night.

Especially when placing air purifier in the bedroom, you should consider high clean air delivery at very low noise levels. Blueair air purifiers are so quiet you might have to check to see if yours is actually switched on!

The near silence is the result of the Blueair HEPASilent™ technology, which first gives incoming particles in the air an electrical charge so that they will stick to the filter medium more easily. Since they are drawn to the filter like a magnet, we can make our filters less dense. That means the fan doesn’t work as hard to push through the same amount of air, which results in very quiet operation.

Energy efficient air purifiers

Energy efficiency is another issue. Since the fan doesn’t have to work as hard in a Blueair air purifier, our air purifiers are among the most energy-efficient on the planet for the performance they deliver. Typically, they use only as much electricity as a light bulb.

Air purifiers for smoke, gases and exhaust

If smokers are present, or you live in an area with a lot of automobile traffic, you might be exposing children’s lungs to particles that are especially harmful to their sensitive and still developing lungs. Equipping your Blueair air purifier with a filter containing activated carbon effectively removes cigarette smoke and odors, as well as traffic exhaust, smog and airborne chemicals, PM2.5 and VOCs.

In Blueair SmokeStop™ filters, the high volume and weight of carbon, plus the low-density design and large surface area of the mechanical filter medium, mean the filters last a long time without becoming clogged. For ultimate and up to four times faster smoke and gas removal, you can use a Blueair DualProtection™ filter with powdered, high-porosity coconut carbon.

What size air purifier do I need?

Experts all say that you should choose an air purifier capable of changing the air in your room five times per hour. Of course, you can oversize your air purifier a bit, but you should avoid under sizing it.

So, to get the right size, measure your room and look at the CADR (which stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate). CADR measures an air cleaner's effectiveness based on room space and the volume of clean air produced per minute. This shows how well dust, pollen and smoke, the three most common indoor air pollutants, are removed from the air you breathe.

Providing a direct comparison between top-rated air purifiers, CADR is the only air purifier standard that is recognized as an American National Standard, since it allows for consistent comparison between AHAM (American Home Appliances Manufacturers) certified products.

CADR is also endorsed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. You can learn more about CADR here.

Now that you have considered filtering performance, noise level and energy-efficiency, it’s time to choose which family of our air purifiers fit your family best.
