Surprise: Pollen is everywhere

Surprise: Pollen is everywhere

Pollen is a year-round allergen in most places around the globe. Spring brings tree pollen, summer grass pollen, and autumn weed pollen. Even with closed windows, pollen finds its way indoors – on your hair, shoes, clothing, and on your pets. Your home’s air vents let pollen in too. Worse yet, climate change is extending the reach of pollen-producing plants and the length of the growing seasons. The result? More people are getting pollen allergies and having more severe allergic reactions.

Pollen allergies: What you need to know

Pollen is a fine yellowish powder that fertilizes plants. It spreads by the wind, insects, birds and animals. Inhaling pollen causes your body to try to expel it. Watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, wheezing and scratchy throat are symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. Up to 30 percent of the world’s population suffers from hay fever, making it the most common allergic condition. There are ways to get relief – from avoidance to medication and allergy shots to air purifiers.
