When aroma oils are diffused, nebulized or heated they don’t stay as a smell, they become microscopic droplets or aerosols suspended in the air. These droplets are often well within the PM 2.5 range that can be detected by a Blueair Air Purifiers PM sensor so although aroma oils are not air pollution they can be read as such when diffused in these ways.

Fragrance oils form airborne aerosols that scatter the purifier’s laser sensor, increasing PM readings even though the particles are oil-based rather than combustion or dust pollution.

• When it comes to aroma oil diffusion, PM increase does not mean there is harmful pollution present in the air
• It indicates airborne load (i.e. aerosol aroma oil), not toxicity, dust, pollen, smoke, etc.
• If your purifier is set to auto mode, it may ramp up fan speed correctly but this is expected behavior, not a sensor error

Avoid placing diffusers directly next to Air Purifiers.

Pets are often more sensitive than humans to scented compounds. The use of aroma oils around pets may cause some respiratory irritation. To avoid any discomfort when diffusing aroma oils in a home with a pet we recommend the below actions:

• Avoid diffusing oils where pets live or sleep
• Ensure good ventilation, and let pets leave the room
• If your pet has known respiratory issues, consult with your veterinarian before diffusing aroma oil
• Never apply aroma oils directly to a pet's skin or fur

Healthcare sources often recommend avoiding essential oil diffusion around infants and children under 3 years old. If you do plan to use aroma oils near babies, we recommend the below actions:

• Use lower concentrations and ideally not directly in a baby’s room or play area
• Keep exposure brief and well-ventilated spaces
• Consult the baby’s pediatrician for tailored guidance
